Want to get into some serious inshore action without the hassle of heading way offshore? Captain Joe Masi's got you covered with his Tampa Bay fishing charters that'll put you on the fish from day one. Operating out of Bay Pines, FL, this isn't your typical tourist trap operation – Joe knows these waters like the back of his hand and has the track record to prove it. Whether you've got 4 or 5 hours to spare, you'll be targeting some of Tampa Bay's most sought-after species including gag grouper, snook, redfish, and sea trout. With room for up to 3 anglers, it's the perfect setup for a small group looking to maximize their time on the water.
This charter runs like clockwork from the moment you step aboard. Captain Joe provides all the gear you'll need – no need to stress about bringing the right tackle or wondering if your setup can handle what's swimming around out there. The boat's equipped with quality rods, reels, and a tackle box full of proven lures and baits that produce results in these waters. You'll be fishing the productive flats, structure, and channels that make Tampa Bay such a hotspot for inshore species. Joe's approach is all about adapting to conditions – if the fish aren't biting in one spot, you're moving to the next until you find them. The vibe stays relaxed but focused, perfect whether you're bringing kids along or it's your first time picking up a rod.
Inshore fishing in Tampa Bay is all about reading the water and matching your approach to what the fish are doing. Captain Joe runs a mix of live bait and artificial lures depending on what's working best that day. You might find yourself bouncing jigs along the bottom for grouper, throwing topwater plugs at snook hiding under docks, or working soft plastics through grass flats where redfish cruise. The beauty of this fishery is the variety – one cast you're fighting a hard-pulling red, the next you've got a snook trying to jump out of the water. Joe's got the local knowledge to put you on structure that holds fish year-round, plus he knows the seasonal patterns that can make or break your day on the water.
"Joe was great, we had an excellent time and caught a lot of fish. Would highly recommend!" - Tristan. "We have been fishing charters in Florida for over 20 years. Some good, some bad. Fishing with Joe was hands down the most fun, most successful trip including a 36" Snook my gf caught. It was a full service charter, he is very knowledgeable, patient, and willing to move to find the fish. He was low stress and he made everyone comfortable as we had beginners to experienced anglers with us. We will definitely be fishing with him again. Not just the catch, but it was the best charter I have been on all around." - Regan. "Captain Joe was great, like most reviews say, fishing with him is like fishing with a buddy you've known a lifetime. My wife and I had a great time, caught a bunch of fish and will be back in the future!" - James.
Gag grouper are the heavyweight champions of this trip, and Tampa Bay holds some quality fish that'll test your drag system. These bottom dwellers love hanging around structure – think rocky areas, ledges, and artificial reefs where they can ambush prey. Gags are smart fish that'll head straight for cover when hooked, so you've got to muscle them up quickly or risk getting cut off. They're most active during cooler months, roughly October through March, when they move into shallower water to feed. What makes them so fun to target is that explosive strike followed by a bulldogging fight that'll have your arms burning. Plus, they're excellent table fare when you're ready to fire up the grill.
Snook are the crown jewel of Florida inshore fishing, and Tampa Bay produces some monsters that'll give you stories to tell for years. These ambush predators love hanging around structure – docks, mangroves, bridges, anywhere they can hide and wait for baitfish to swim by. What makes snook so addictive is their acrobatic fights – they'll jump, run, and do everything possible to throw the hook. The slot limit keeps things interesting since you're looking for that perfect fish between 28-33 inches. Summer months are prime time when they're most active, but you can catch them year-round if you know where to look. Their hard strike and aerial displays make every hookup memorable.
Sea trout might not get the headlines, but they're incredibly fun to catch and perfect for anglers looking to bend a rod consistently. These spotted beauties love grass flats where they hunt shrimp and small baitfish. They're willing biters that'll hit both live bait and artificials, making them great for beginners or kids who want steady action. Trout have a distinctive soft mouth, so you've got to keep steady pressure without horsing them in. They're most active during dawn and dusk periods, and the cooler months typically produce the biggest fish. Their willingness to bite and scrappy fights make them a charter boat favorite.
Redfish are the bulldogs of the flats – once they feel the hook, they'll make powerful runs that'll test your equipment and technique. These copper-colored fighters love shallow water where they cruise looking for crabs, shrimp, and small fish. What makes reds special is their predictable behavior – they follow tidal movements and stick to proven feeding areas, which means experienced guides like Joe know exactly where to find them. They're year-round residents that provide consistent action regardless of season. The thrill comes from sight fishing when you can actually see these bronze torpedoes cruising the shallows before making your cast. Their hard pulls and stubborn nature

We had a wonderful time with Captain Joe Masi. He is a very knowledgable fisherman and local to the St. Pete area. He worked very hard to get us on the fish for the weather conditions that we had. I would definitely recommend Joe and use him in the future!

Unforgettable Fishing Trip with Captain Joe (Masi Boys)! We had an incredible experience with Masi Boys Fishing Charter! From start to finish, Captain Joe was professional, knowledgeable, and awesome with the kids. My sons had an absolute blast—catching all kinds of fish, including grouper, flounder, snapper and more! 🎣 The boat was clean, the gear was top-notch, and the vibe was fun and relaxed. Captain Joe took us to great spots and kept everyone engaged the entire time. He made sure the boys were safe, smiling, and reeling in fish after fish. The smiles say it all! If you’re looking for a family-friendly fishing trip that your kids will talk about for years, Masi Boys is it. We’ll definitely be back again!

Gag Grouper are solid fighters that'll test your gear around Tampa Bay's rocky structure and offshore reefs. These chunky fish average 20 inches but can push 40+ pounds when you find the big ones. They love hanging around stone crab traps, ledges, and wrecks in 30-80 feet of water. The bite stays consistent year-round, though spring and fall tend to be most productive. What makes them special is that powerful initial run - they'll try to drag your bait straight back to their hole, so keep that drag tight and don't give them an inch. The meat is outstanding too, sweet and flaky white flesh that's hard to beat on the dinner table. Pro tip: once you hook one, keep steady pressure and work them up quickly before they can wrap you around structure.

Redfish are Tampa Bay's most recognizable catch with their copper-bronze color and distinctive black spot near the tail. These bruisers average 18-27 inches but the big "bull" reds can push 40+ inches and really test your tackle. You'll find them cruising shallow flats, oyster bars, and mangrove shorelines in just 1-4 feet of water - sometimes so shallow their backs show. Spring and fall offer the best action when they school up and feed heavily. What makes them special is that powerful, bulldogging fight and the way they'll crush topwater lures in skinny water. The smaller "slot" fish are excellent eating with sweet, firm meat. They're year-round residents here, so you can target them any season. Pro tip: look for nervous water or tailing fish on the flats during low light - that's when they really turn on and feed aggressively.

Spotted Sea Trout are Tampa Bay's bread-and-butter fish, perfect for anglers wanting steady action and great table fare. These speckled beauties typically run 12-20 inches with good numbers of keepers throughout our grass flats. You'll find them in 2-6 feet of water over sandy bottom with scattered grass, especially during dawn and dusk. They bite best from spring through fall when water temps are stable. What makes them fun is their willingness to hit artificials - soft plastics, topwater plugs, and live shrimp all work great. The meat is mild and flaky, making them a family favorite for dinner. They're also perfect for beginners since they're not too picky about presentation. My secret is fishing the edges of grass beds during moving water - that's where they ambush baitfish and you'll get the most strikes.

Snook are Tampa Bay's premier inshore game fish, known for that unmistakable black lateral line and fierce attitude. Most run 18-28 inches, but the big females can hit 40+ inches and really put up a scrap. You'll find them around mangroves, docks, and creek mouths in 2-8 feet of water, especially during moving tides. Summer months are prime time when they're actively feeding, though they bite year-round in our waters. What guests love most is their explosive strike and acrobatic jumps - they'll clear the water multiple times trying to throw your lure. The table fare is top-notch too, with sweet white meat that's perfect for the grill. My go-to trick is working live shrimp or pinfish tight to structure on an incoming tide - that's when they really turn on and feed aggressively.
